Rating: 5/5 -- While My Man Godfrey is full of witty dialogue and classical direction, it's the film's social awareness that really stands out today. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- There's a charm to both Powell and Lombard, making the film transcend generations. It's a cute movie that has fun with levels of wealth in society and sibling rivalry. Full Review

Gregory La Cava's improvisational style received its highest critical acclaim for this 1936 film, a marginally Marxist exercise in class confusion during the Depression. Full Review

It then turned out that My Man Godfrey was really about the class-struggle, not the best subject in the world for comedy. Best not to stay for the ending. It leaves you with the feeling that the whole thing was a waste of time. Full Review

My Man Godfrey emerges with that evasive quality that is not skillful playing, writing or direction, but something that mysteriously adds itself to these things, and makes a tip-top picture. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

AVAILABLE WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!

This madcap satire is a landmark comedy, with witty dialogue, suspenseful comic twists, and a refreshingly irreverent style. William Powell is the erudite butler Godfrey who is paired with Carole Lombard as Irene Bullock. The wealthy and beautiful heiress discovers him sleeping in the city dump during a society scavenger hunt, and decides he would make the perfect butler. Unbeknownst to her, this new "butler" Godfrey is even wealthier than she, and has a few lessons to teach her eccentric family. Irene's formidable father Alexander, already overwhelmed by the colorful crew of family members in his midst, is mortified by the prospect of having another oddball in his home. While Godfrey sets out to teach the Bullock family that money isn't everything, Irene decides that Godfrey would not only make the ideal butler, but the ideal husband as well. This Depression-era comedy offers full-force escapism, an energetic cast, and sophisticated social commentary - it's a romantic romp with a taut script and impeccable comic timing.

Product Description:

Based on the novel by Eric Hatch, this screwball comedy is a genre favorite. On a scavenger hunt for a society ball, haughty Cornelia Bullock discovers Godfrey, a dirty, dishevelled bum lurking around the city dump. She's looking for a "forgotten man" and Godfrey fits the bill perfectly. Hoping to win her first prize, she offers him five dollars to come along with her. Proud and dignified, he refuses, casting her aside. Minutes later, when her lovely younger sister Irene makes the same request, an enamored Godfrey accepts. The hunt sets off an unusual chain of events that bring Godfrey into the Bullock household as a permanent fixture. He'll become deeply embroiled in their family saga before anyone learns his true identity. Re-made in 1957.

My Man Godfrey Movie Lover: from Blackwood, NJ USA -- February, 25, 2006

Bubbly, delightful, delicious. Five star rating is not high enough to describe "My Man Godfrey." If you are feeling down and need a movie to bring you up, this is the one to see.

Delightful Doin's with A Nutty Family Movie Lover: from Trumbull, CT US -- April, 16, 2004

A comedy in the truest sense of the word. Gene Pallette is delightful as Mr. Bullock, the husband/father/ringmaster of his home, trying to maintain a patina of sanity in a household gone bonkers. William Powell, in the title role, is the film's anchor; and his understated performance adds much weight and credibility to the film. Carole Lombard is incredible as the spoiled rich girl who learns a life's worth of lessons from her personal reclaimation project. The entire cast brings this film to life. (Mischa Auer is a riot!) A MY MAN GODFREY will keep you laughing (and thinking) with every viewing.

One of my favorite movies Movie Lover: from Nashville -- February, 28, 2004

I am only twenty-four years old but I love classic movies. I own over fifty classic movies and I am still searching for more. I am absolutely in love with My Man Godfrey. I actually have three DVD’s of this movie because I tend to watch it so much. I would highly recommend it to anyone that loves classical movies as well.
